Bio-diversity

East Lothian is blessed with heather-clad hills and unspoilt beaches, grand estates and ruined cliff-top castles.

The Links at Renaissance is located in the Archerfield Estate, two miles west of North Berwick. The estate comprises grassland as well as mixed and coniferous woodlands, hedgerows and sand dunes. The sensitive development of the golf course and housing at The Links at Renaissance preserves existing wildlife habitats and will increase bio-diversity in an environmentally rich area.

Tree planting has taken place within the estate since the 18th Century and there has been considerable planting and replanting in the last 60 years. Common trees and shrubs include beech, Scots and Corsican pines, sycamore, elder, spruce and buckthorn. Within the pine and beech/sycamore woods at The Links at Renaissance, you will find many species of animal including brown hare, grey squirrel, roe deer, fox, sparrow hawk, woodpecker, barn owl, buzzard, fieldfare and many common woodland birds.

Areas of the Archerfield estate which have been recovered from agricultural use have been planted to enhance wildlife value and maintain and enhance foraging opportunities for many species. One specific objective in the local biodiversity plan has been to re-introduce local wildflower species including birdsfoot trefoil, common vetch, white campion and meadow buttercup. As well as improving the environment for animals, these wild flowers provide attractive year-round splashes of colour for residents and golfers alike.
